Bio

Richard L. Nolan is the William Barclay Harding Professor of Business Administration (Emeritus) at the Harvard Business School. Nolan’s latest book published by Harvard Business Press (2013) is Harder Than I Thought: Becoming a 21st Century Leader (co-authored with Robert Austin and Shannon O’Donnell). In addition, Nolan has published more than a dozen HBR articles, and numerous Harvard Business School case studies. He co-founded of Nolan, Norton and Company, a strategic IT consulting company in 1977, and served as Chairman until 1991 when the company was merged with KPMG. After the merger, Nolan returned to teaching and research at the Harvard Business School. Nolan has been an active board member in several Fortune 500 companies and high-tech companies. In addition to strategic consulting, his work experience includes aerospace software engineering and commercial airplane management at the Boeing Company, and systems analysis at the USA Department of Defense.
