Ron Lifshitz graduated summa cum laude in Physics and Computer Science from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in 1990. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics at Cornell University in 1995 under the mentorship of Prof. David Mermin. Prof. Lifshitz then pursued his postdoctoral research at The California Institute of Technology, from 1995 to 1999, after which he joined the School of Physics & Astronomy at Tel Aviv University, where he teaches and performs theoretical research in the fields of quasicrystals and nanomechanical systems ever since. He was also a longtime Visiting Associate at Caltech, and in the past held visiting faculty appointments at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Physics and the University of Stuttgart, as well as the National Taipei University of Technology. Prof. Lifshitz has chaired the Department of Condensed Matter Physics at Tel Aviv University, and the Commission on Aperiodic Crystals of the International Union of Crystallography, as well as a number of scientific conferences, among them a conference in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the discovery of quasicrystals, held in Tel Aviv in 2007, and the 56th Meeting of the Israel Physical Society in 2010. Prof. Lifshitz is currently a member of the Israeli Ministry of Education's Physics Curriculum Committee. He is the recipient of the 2002 Olschwang Prize in Physics of the Israel Science Foundation, and the 2013 Jean-Marie Dubois Award in Quasicrystals. He was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2015, and is a five-time recipient of the Rector's Award for excellence in teaching.
