About the Course

Solar Energy System Design builds upon the introduction to PV systems from Solar Energy Basics course, which included basic system components and functions, as well as some basic system sizing using simplifying assumptions. You should at this point have a basic understanding of electrical power and energy, be able to calculate the energy needs of a site as well as energy production potential for a PV system at a given location under optimal conditions. Much of this course will focus on incorporating on the ground conditions into energy production considerations, and how to account for these conditions in system design and equipment selection. By the end of this course you should be able to incorporate losses in irradiance due to array setups with less than optimal positioning and/or shading, and account for variations in module output due to temperature variations in your system design....

Apperently, the answer key for some questions are wrong. So you spend a lot time with the calculations because you think you are doing something wrong until you find out in the discussion area that everyone is facing the same problem. Therefore it is impossible to get a certificate from this. Very annoying and a total waste of time.

I would say the videos are good though but I am not sure anymore. The lecturer or whoever is responsible, didnt even bother themselves to check the simplest thing in the course, before start selling it to people. After finding this out, I unfortunatelly doubt there might be some wrong informations in the course as well.

Really good course for the design of ongrid PV systems: a lot of practical advice on how to dimension this kind of PV systems. What could be added (but maybe this also for another course): how to design grid independent systems with battery storage and what are (ranges for) prices, on what do they depend etc.

Good content. The quiz will drive you crazy because some answers to the quizzes are wrong (check the discussion forum). Overall I learnt a lot, thank you!

The concept with video, some reading, quiz and capstone is good. Easy to learn quit much in short time. Neal Abrams is presenting in a good and easy understandable way.

Improvement 1.

Have a defind path or selection of course included for a certain competence area, like solar power with connection to battery solution.

Improvement 2.

In case there is challenges or open question with something, a quiz question or question about something in the course material, there is no way to have support. Discussion forum exist, yes, but there in same questons asked many time over several years, without answers. Would be great to have possibility to have support from couse staff, based on mail, chat, teams meeting open for questions.

question were very difficult to answer in any format other than exactly what was specified. ex to the nearest whole wat meant the entire formula needed to use rounded numbers and not just the final product. Which is obviously unclear and confusing,.

No support, no answered question. The course has not been updated for a long time. The data from the PV Watt calculator has been changed in the meantime. Very little or no practical information on surge protection design and conductor selection.

This was a great course. Specially for electrical engineers it is a very helpful course. But, someone from non technical background can also easily get through with this course as the instructor explains it in the most easy possible way. Overall i really liked this course. I recommend all electrical engineers to give this course a try.
