About the Course

This design-centric course examines the broad question of what an interface is and what role a designer plays in creating a user interface. Learning how to design and articulate meaning using color, type, and imagery is essential to making interfaces function clearly and seamlessly. Through a series of lectures and visual exercises, you will focus on the many individual elements and components that make up the skillset of an interface designer. By the end of this course, you will be able to describe the key formal elements of clear, consistent, and intuitive UI design, and apply your learned skills to the design of a static screen-based interface. This is the first course in the UI/UX Design Specialization, which brings a design-centric approach to user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design, and offers practical, skill-based instruction centered around a visual communications perspective, rather than on one focused on marketing or programming alone. These courses are ideal for anyone with some experience in graphic or visual design and who would like to build their skill set in UI or UX for app and web design. It would also be ideal for anyone with experience in front- or back-end web development or human-computer interaction and want to sharpen their visual design and analysis skills for UI or UX....

Lectures covered just the basics of UI design. Instructor did not put in any effort to grade or even view the students' projects. You *can* audit the course without paying, but then your project will not be reviewed by your peers. I made the mistake of paying for the course, and in return got completely worthless peer review.

All assignments (except an initial quiz) of this course are graded by peer review - and it is pretty much the luck of the draw who reviews your work, how much they care and know about the subject. I would not sign up for a peer graded course on Coursera again.

I dont think it was very thorough. Don't we have to do wireframes prior to mock-ups?

A lot of water. The only plus is the ability to come up with your own application

The course mentions that this is an introductory course with no prerequisites, however, if you do not know how to use designing tools such as InDesign on Sketch, it's tough to complete the course. The course also relies on peer-reviewing assignments that I feel are the worst. The graders don't do their job properly and reduce points for no reason. When the TAs are asked about it, they have a standard response to these problems but no solution. Absolutely not worth the time and effort.

The course description should be updated to include the software requirements.

I enrolled in this course so that I could make better screen mockups using the tool that I currently use. I didn't know from the course description that it requires the use of specific software, which is too expensive for someone not pursuing a full time career in UX design. I had no choice but to abandon the course without learning anything.

Terrible program for learning. You really need to already know how to use ALL the programs and ALL the skills because other students will rate your work well below average. I worked o projects for days and other students expect A+ work to even give a pass. For example one said the TYPE on my button was not legible yet is was regular font at 18pt. I am not sure they are even real people.

The teachers do not correct your assignments at any time, they do not verify the comments of other students about you project and perhaps there are not even constructive comments of your work.

I feel very disappointed.

Useless. If you're an experienced graphic designer, there's nothing you'll learn from this course, even if you've never done UI/UX design. I've wasted so much time waiting for a valuable content to come, but it didn't.

I was hoping to learn stronger foundational skills as a UI/UX designer that was not classically trained in this discipline, but I feel as though this course is almost *too* surface level.

Wow! This is my first online course. I had the pleasure of completing an online course on "Visual Elements of User Interface Design," and it was an incredibly enriching experience. The course curriculum was thoughtfully crafted to cater to both beginners and seasoned designers, covering fundamental design principles and their practical application in real-world scenarios. What set this course apart was the hands-on approach through practical exercises, design projects, and case studies, which was instrumental in honing my skills. The course also included industry-relevant tools and software demonstrations, which made it stand out. What's more, the interactive nature of the course fostered a sense of community among participants, creating a supportive and engaging learning environment. With highly available instructors willing to assist, I can confidently recommend this course to anyone passionate about creating visually captivating interfaces that deliver exceptional user experiences.

The course syllabus was like brushing up my skills of my 27 years of practical experience. One can finish it at leisure as extremely sufficientt time is allotted to complete this course with proper assignment evaluation by the peers. It did have a systematic flow which helped clearing even the slightest of the doubt in the communication flow one can get during handling any assignements. Loved the quiz section the most as it evaluates the grasping of the designer. Having a certification of UIUX is a creditable asset in your portfolio and hence I opted for this course which now I am extremely happy that I am a part of this culture and can extend my service horizons even in this field. Thank you so much to all my Peers, Mentors & Coursera Team. Extremely greatful.

Visual elements of the user interface design course helped me to become more comfortable with the idea of doing Ui/Ux design. I have always been doing design for printing media but now I am even considering learning more about digital design with Coursera and why not doing a master's degree in Ux design abroad. The course is complete and well structured, everything was explained in detail and the experience of learning online was friendly and easy to understand. I think that the peer grading part can be improved somehow but overall the content in terms of amount and quality of information is excellent, I am looking forward to doing the next three courses to enhance my skills as a designer.

The instructors are gifted, and the course extremely well-designed. With effort, you will learn a great deal from this course. The instructor input into the course is genius. There are a number of cheating students that somehow cheat their way through this course - they submit frivolous work, unacceptably inadequate work, non-visual work, work from other classes or even just a picture. I think that either the student cheats from peer-review coping work to resubmit and/or on lying cheating student gets together with another lying cheating student and they grade each others work. How else can these failures move through their assignments the end-of-the course assignment??

The instructor is very precise on the words and the process articulation and manages to make them very clear through well chosen illustrative examples. I appreciate that all examples comes from very few projects, it is as if we see the different aspects and steps of the method being applied.

The teacher's enunciation makes it easy to understand even for non-English speakers. The assignments are well explained and the review is well guided so that you mostly get useful peer reviews.

It is nice to apply the concepts on a fun project, it makes them sink in and motivate you to work on the course. I'd like to develop my app project for real!

I never thought i could learn ui/ux designing because i thought its very complex and different from other types of designing but after taking this course it feels easy and it was taught so well with comprehensive examples , amazing assignments which i really loved doing since a major project was broken down into parts and i think that was really a very effective way to make sure that one is learning and implementing something at each and every step! I would highly recommend anyone who is planning to start their journey in ui/ux by taking this course.

To the instructors--thank you for offering a great introduction to User Interface Design. I really appreciated the insights shared in various videos over the 4-week course. One of the most valuable insights I gained was the simple distinction that a desktop screen might often offer, say, 4 sections on one screen, where a mobile device must break that same information up into 1 section (each) on 4 screens. This is just one of the many useful bits of knowledge that, combined with real-world mockup practice, helped me gain footing in UI design.

I recently completed the UI/UX course offered here, and I am absolutely thrilled with the experience. From start to finish, the course was exceptionally well-designed, providing a comprehensive and engaging learning journey. The content was outstanding. Each module was thoughtfully structured, covering everything from basic design principles to advanced user experience strategies. The course didn't just scratch the surface; it delved deep into the intricacies of both UI and UX, giving me a profound understanding of the field.

The material provided by instructors is amazing. Well structured, well explained. I learned a lot - not only what to do, but how and why.

The only weakness I see is the peer reviews - it is very random what you get. Some people are more serious and spend time to rate carefully and provide useful feedback. Some are just clicking through and give points rather accidentally - you can miss some points even when the task is correctly solved, because of slappy review. I miss an option to ask for new review in such cases.

Embora meu inglês não seja bom o suficiente, incentivo que tentem, a linguagem usada é simples, a explicação tem um bom embasamento teórico, temos muita prática mesmo que seja uma plataforma online. O conteúdo é excelente!

The course covers everything that you need to know about developing an interface. It had a 50/50 proportion of theory and plactice. You wiil be able to decide the mood of an interface, set the main colors and fonts to make buttons, menus, states... all assets to create the UI for the proper audicence.

I finished the course understanding that we need to set our purposes in order to make the audience get the message!

Calarts is a dream university, tasting a little about it is an irreplaceable opportunity!

In this first course of the specialization, the students are taught the essentials of visual design. The student can geta a deep understanding of the visual design. Finally, the students have to create a project and apply their knowledge to the actual situation. Professor Michael Worthington has explained all the concepts in detail. I have learnt a lot about user Interface from this course. I would recommend this course to all who want to make their career in UX/UI designing.
