Sparklines represent another useful tool for visualizing data. So I'm going to show you Sparklines real quick in this screencast. I've got this file called Sparklines that you can use if you want to work along with me. We might have the quarterly sales perhaps in millions of dollars here for a large store. We've got different departments here, automotive, groceries, clothing, housewares, and garden. And we've got the various sales for that quarter. There's this data visualization tool called Sparklines. And you can highlight the data, so I can highlight our data here. A lot of times if you go down here to the quick analysis toolbar, you can find the Sparklines. They're over here on the right. So that's one way or you can go up here to Insert and if you go into Sparklines group here, you can add Sparklines. I'm going to go ahead and add a column Sparkline and it asks you for your data range. And the location where we want those to be placed, I'm just going to put right next to it. I can click OK. And what this is doing is it is showing a trend in that same row. So this first Sparkline at the top is showing automotive trend, 25 up to 34, and each one of those it kind of shows a trend. Now you can format the Sparklines a couple different ways. We can put in here the different colors and formats. If you want, you can turn this into a line by clicking up here. So that would be a line. You can change the color. So maybe we want to change this to green and let's turn it back to a column. This will show trends in each of the departments, but it doesn't really show how big the grocery sales are compared to housewares. It's all sort of looks kind of the same. So you can highlight these, you can go up here to Axis. We can change the vertical axis minimum to same for all Sparklines. And I can also do that for the maximum. If I change those, now we're sort of comparing apples to apples and we've got the same scale. And you can see how small the garden and housewares is compared to the grocery sales. And again, you might want to convert this back into a line and I would encourage you to kind of play around with the different options. Another example is shown here on sheet 2, we've got various students here and maybe their performances on their homework assignments. In this case, I'm going to go down to the bottom. And from the quick analysis tool, I'm going to select Sparklines. And I'm just going to have this in a line. And this shows then a trend of those students. So you can kind of see which ones are trending upwards, which are are trending downwards as the semester progresses, and so on. And again, I can go over here into Sparklines. And maybe I want to make them all on the same axis. I can change the minimum and maximum to be the same for all the Sparklines. Sparklines just represent another tool that you can use to visualize data in Excel.
