One, two, ready! >> [MUSIC] >> Beautiful job. [APPLAUSE] >> Wish I could go song room like every day. Yeah. >> Yeah, that would be great. >> I think that would be awesome. >> I've actually been really lucky, this is the second school that I've been in, as a principal, with a song room in it and my experience has been nothing but being positive. >> Really the essence of what the song room does is improves students social, emotional, and educational outcomes through music. They're actively drumming, they're actively singing as much as possible, we're writing songs. And through those experiences they're having opportunities to be leaders. They're having opportunities to improve their team work, improve their respect for each other. >> In my class I say they all benefit from the song room, but there's a pocket of my students who sometimes find it hard to make the right choice to be engaged in learning straight away. It really is that fantastic. Just hook of interest. The way there's no judgement of what they know, what they don't know. >> It gives students who may not experience being particularly high achievers in academic schooling. That they can come into the room and know that they're equal. They have a place in the circle and they're all equal each other. [SOUND] >> Is the sound getting lower or higher? >> Lower. >> Yeah, that means you're going further away, so you need to turn around. [SOUND] You're getting close! [SOUND] [APPLAUSE] >> When I get back from song room I feel like really happy that I've done all of those activities. But, sure it makes me feel a little sad that I have to wait like a whole entire week before I can actually do them again. >> The song room has independent research that shows that song room actually improves attendance levels for students. Song room is fun. It gives them a reason to come to school on whatever day that it's on. So for me, it's on Mondays, which can, for a lot of schools, be difficult to get students in on a Monday. So, they're coming in they're really looking forward to it. It's engaging to them. It breaks down some barriers for them in their schooling. >> Yeah, so, there's been quiet a lot of benefits in terms of wanting to participate, attending school and feeling very positive about school. Somebody else want to lay tonga? [SOUND] >> Do you want to do it by yourself or with me? Can you do it by yourself? [MUSIC] Do you ever feel nervous when you're in song room? >> I did at the start. But then after I got used to it, I kind of like it. And I forgot about my nerves and started getting excited for them. >> What we found is that we had those quiet ones that never really wanted to participate in anything like this, sneaking into the room in the library we had it last year and wanting to participate in the drumming in their own time as well so they could practice and get better. Also what happens when the kids go back is they learn that they have a voice. And again those little quiet ones who never really say boo in class all of a sudden realize that they do have a little voice in there and they can express themselves. Confidently because it by news to it in the song, or in by the singing, drumming, playing other instrument or just being with the rest of the kid as well. [MUSIC] Beautiful. [MUSIC] Good job. >> I like music because it's a way to express myself. >> Music makes me feel relaxed. >> My favorite thing about song room is singing because I like to sing and it makes me make calm. >> For students who have behavior management issues, I found that drumming is incredible for them especially for the older boys. And some of the kids who are in there might feel a little too cool for school and when you first have them in the class it's something that brings them together. Gives them the opportunity to be physical with something, to have a bit of a bash, but also immediately it's something that they think is fun and cool and they all want to be a part of. And so it's really easy to set up a situation where they want to behave in the best possible way. >> They can participate straight away so there's no problems with behavior. They're just having a great time because they're not feeling judged. >> [MUSIC] >> Music makes me calm. If I get upset about something. >> Some people get angry and they can't control themselves. So they listen to music to calm them down. >> Well, whenever I'm mad I just feel like it's nice to detach myself from the group and just sing out a lot of my anger just belching out like all of the words. It just make me feel better and calmer. These some student who have real issues, they've got a lot of personal issues, they've got academic issues at school. It's not their favorite place to come. So if part of what we're doing is to get those students who really enjoy being at school and feel proud about where they go, for me, a school song is a really nice way to do that. And to have a cool school song that you like is even more important. So I wanted to make something that the students had by for, that they would enjoy singing. That they would really feel apart of. One, two, ready at >> [MUSIC] Verse two. [MUSIC] Perfect, let's do it from the beginning. [MUSIC]
