[MUSIC] Welcome everybody. I'm very happy and pleased to welcome you to this Patenting in Biotechnology course. My name is Fred De Masi and I'm an Associate Professor here at Technical University of Denmark where I teach Introduction to Physics Biology and International Property Rights. So the reason of doing this course on patenting in biotechnology is started from the idea that most of us wetland biologists have never been introduced to the concept of intellectual property. So we basically never thought about our science as a potentially intellectual properties or patents or whatever. So our thoughts or our idea is that we would like to educate more and more of the wet lab scientists or the basic scientists to actually think about the possibility of protecting their science and their research in order to maybe generate some profit and some benefits and to look at the picture from a little bit bigger scope. So in this course we're going to give you some basic introduction to intellectual property so, what kind of intellectual property rights we have, the patents and trademarks and copyrights and others. But we will put our main focus on patents, which is what we are mainly interested in. So patents, we'll be discussing about the idea behind the patent. What are the rules of a patent, how do you apply for a patent, what is the timeline of the patent, how do you search into patent database to see whether your idea has already been patented by somebody else, and how to basically deal with your patent, or how to try to make some profit or how to basically market your invention. Looking at other tools like freedom to operate and licensing and other tools. So who are we? We are a group of teachers in intellectual property at three different universities in Copenhagen. There's the Technical University of Denmark which I represent, and we have teachers from the University of Copenhagen and teachers from the Copenhagen Business School. >> My name is Karin Beukel. I'm an assistant professor at Copenhagen University, and associate lecturer to Copenhagen Business School. I teach intellectual property rights, and also innovation and entrepreneurship, both at PhD and master level. And in this course, I will take care of the part on freedom to operate and licensing. >> My name is Peter Ulvskov, I'm Professor of Plant Biology at Copenhagen University. I teach biochemistry and advanced biotechnology and intellectual property rights and also a PHD course in innovation and intellectual property rights. In this course I will lead you through the use of the various databases that you employ in investigating patents. >> Hello, my name is Clause B Jorgensen. I'm a professor at University of Copenhagen where I teach genetics, genomics and advanced biotechnology and intellectual property rights. In this course I'll take care of the module in Biotech innovations. >> My name is Finn Valentin. I'm the director of the BioBusiness and Innovation program at Copenhagen Business School. This program invites students with a bachelor background in BioScience and part of the entry requirement to get into the master's degree is that you meet requirements regarding IPR capabilities. This course will help you meet that requirement. >> As you have just heard from Professor Valentin, we have also program which is run by the Copenhagen Business School, in collaboration with the other partner universities by entrepreneurship called a BBIP. So one requirement and one fundamental requirement to enter that master course is to obtain five ECTS credits or ECTS points on intellectual property. So while our courses that we teach in vivo at our universities provide those five ECTS points, this particular course on Coursera will not allow you to get those particular points. So if you're interested in joining the course, we have some other alternatives that you could follow to be able to get those famous ECTS points that would allow you to get into the BBIP. In the website of this course in the introductory pages you will have a couple of links that will explain you how to do that. So just to briefly mention this, you could take this course and pass it with the final exam and get your Coursera certificate of this course and use that as a pre-entry requirement for a crash course on IPR in. Or you could follow the link from the universities that would allow you to register as a university student and take an official course that would then allow you to have a real exam that will provide you with the five ECTS points at the university. So you will find all information on how to actually get those particular points required for entering the BBIP in the links that are present in the webpages of this course, in the course. Where you will be guided through all various possibilities to register for official courses. If you cannot find the right answer or you have more questions about the BBIP and how to enroll to get the official credits assigned, send an email to the email address that you find on the website and/or send me an email or any of our teachers email we have put on the website. We will be very happy to help you out in finding the right solution for your case. That's it. Thank you very much for your attention and I hope you will enjoy the course and see you in a few weeks time where we will wrap up and conclude everything. [MUSIC]
